Build your own website

A website is nothing more than a collection of files that link to each other. Those files are stored on a host computer somewhere on the internet, and any reference made to your domain through a web browser will redirect the visitor to your host company and ultimately to your website files.

Picking your domain name - selecting the right domain name is an important first step towards your online presence. You should pick a domain that matches a phrase that is already being searched every month.

If you're a dog groomer in Memphis, then you should buy a domain that matches an existing search phrase, such as memphisdoggroomer.com. If you've already established a brand name for your company, such as Nike, then purchase a domain name to match the phrase. However, 95% of businesses don't have a brand name yet, so they would be better served purchasing a domain name that matches an existing search phrase.

Registering your domain name - you should initially register your domain name for a minimum of three years. Search engines prefer websites that are initially registered for more than one year. A domain registered for three years indicates the domain owner is serious about online marketing and is not a spammer creating a throw-away domain. Please read my recommended reading page for the name of the domain registrar that I use exclusively.

Building your website - unless you're computer savvy, I suggest you hire a freelance designer for your website. If you're on a shoestring budget, you can find a quality designer at either elance.com or getafreelancer.com. Both of those sites can connect you with high quality, freelance designers from around the world at rock bottom prices. If you want to design your own website, I recommend the .html editor Adobe Dreamweaver. You'll need to learn the basics of .html and css if you're serious about designing websites.
